CIA UPDATE

Did you know that the CIA exam is set to undergo revisions and updates commencing in March 2025? The upcoming changes in the Global Internal Audit Standards in 2024 will directly influence the CIA pathway and examination in 2025.

Additionally, the IIA is planning a price increase for the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) application and exam registration fees. The price increase will take effect globally on 1 July 2024, except for the CIA Challenge Exams which will take effect 1 April 2024. The IIA are planning a biannual price increase thereafter.

If you, or someone you know, are interested in taking the CIA three-part examination, Global IIA recommends applying and registering now, in anticipation of the upcoming changes in 2025. IIA NZ is excited to announce that we are working on providing you with the CIA Learning system and a comprehensive three-part online training programme next year.

If you're eager to embark on your CIA study journey, it's advisable to heed Global IIA's recommendation and apply sooner rather than later. Please remember that you must obtain approval first, and we encourage you to review the entry requirements before commencing your study and examination. In the event that you do not meet the entry requirements, you will need to complete The Internal Audit Practitioner® programme as a prerequisite before applying for and registering in the CIA pathway. The Internal Audit Practitioner® programme offers a way for new and rotational auditors to swiftly demonstrate their internal audit aptitude as they take their initial steps into the field of internal auditing.

GLOBAL IIA: THE IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL CERTIFICATION RENEWAL

To keep pace with developing trends and the ever-changing risk landscape, it is essential for IIA certification holders to regularly enhance their knowledge, skills, and competencies through continuing professional development. Certification holders renew their certifications annually and demonstrate their commitment to keeping their knowledge current and their skills sharp by earning and attesting to continuing professional education (CPE) credit hours throughout the year.

Certification Renewal Requirements

Annual Certification Renewal opens 1 October each year. Log in to the Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS) to begin your renewal.

The renewal deadline is 31 December each year. Should you fail to renew your Active certification, it will enter a Grace status, and as a result, you are no longer approved to represent yourself as a certified individual. Individuals remaining in Grace for 2 years will enter a Revoked status and must reapply and retest if they wish to become certified again.

As an IIA certified or qualified professional, you are responsible for ensuring that your certification is renewed annually. You must log in to CCMS to complete your certification renewal.

For further information, please refer to the Global IIA Annual Certification Renewal Policy document. (see attached).

What is changing?

The most significant policy change is that once a certification is expired, it cannot be reinstated. The certification is revoked if the holder goes 3 years or longer without reporting CPE. If an individual with a revoked certification wishes to become certified again, they must reapply to the certification program and pass all required exams to recertify.

  • Any surplus of CPE acquired during a calendar year may be used for the following calendar year reporting cycle (20 hours max for CIA and 10 hours for other IIA designations can be rolled over)
  • Grace period increased from 1 year to 2 years.
  • A certification will be "revoked" if the holder goes 3 consecutive years without reporting CPE. A certification in "revoked" status cannot be reinstated; an individual with "revoked" certifications needs to retake the exams.
  • If a certification holder enters into grace status, the holder may no longer use their designation. They may begin using the designation again when their status is returned to active.
  • Once revoked, there is no provision to recertify for discontinued certification programs (CCSA, CFSA, CGAP, QIAL).
  • A designation must be in Active status to be moved to Retired status. Individuals remaining in Retired status for more than two years will be required to recertify to restore their CIA or CRMA designation to an Active status.

For further details, please refer to the summary of changes and certification status table available on the Global IIA website.

Thanks! IIA NZ Event: Lunch n Learn

The final IIA NZ Lunch n Learn (LnL) Wellington session of the year featured the incredible Michelle Sharp, CEO of UNICEF Aotearoa. The topic, "Navigating Complexity: Internal Auditing in the Charity Sector," brought insightful discussions on managing a charitable organisation, where children's well-being and financial stewardship intersect.

Her passion for internal auditing shone through as she showcased its pivotal role in enhancing operations and impact within the charity sector, using UNICEF NZ as a compelling example.

The reflection of the event was "Mana in Mahi - Strength in Work," resonating with Michelle's passion evident in her role with UNICEF. Her underlying focus on continual improvement was a powerful takeaway.

Thanks to everyone for a year of enriching LnL sessions in Wellington! Stay tuned for more exciting events in the coming year!

For further details, please refer to the summary of changes and certification status table available on the Global IIA website.
